Bio Farma Plans New Vaccine Manufacturing Facility, Highlighting Opportunities in Pharmaceutical Technology

Indonesia’s pharmaceutical manufacturing sector is preparing for further expansion as PT Bio Farma (Persero) outlines plans to develop a new vaccine production facility outside Bandung, West Java.

The development was reported on 28 October 2026, following remarks by Bio Farma’s Director of Research and Development, Dicky Mahardhika Taryono, during the Danantara Technology Innovation Investment Forum (DTIIF) 2026 in Jakarta.

The planned expansion forms part of Bio Farma’s efforts to strengthen national vaccine manufacturing capacity and enhance its competitiveness in international markets.

NEW MANUFACTURING FACILITY PLANNED

Bio Farma is preparing to develop a new manufacturing facility outside Bandung, where its existing production operations are concentrated.

Initial project preparations are expected to include master planning, site planning, and procurement planning.

According to the announcement, the proposed facility is designed to accommodate production capacity of up to 750 million vaccine doses, with initial production targeted between 2029 and 2031.

The precise site location, investment value, construction schedule, and procurement arrangements have not yet been publicly confirmed.

EXPANSION OF EXISTING PRODUCTION INFRASTRUCTURE

Alongside the proposed new facility, Bio Farma is planning to revitalise existing production infrastructure in Bandung-Pasteur.

The expansion programme includes planned capacity improvements at Buildings 12 and 43, which are expected to provide approximately 145 million additional vaccine doses of production capacity.

Further development at Building 34 is planned to add approximately seven million doses.

These developments are intended to strengthen production capabilities and support Indonesia’s long-term vaccine supply requirements.

POTENTIAL BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES

The planned expansion could generate future demand for specialised pharmaceutical manufacturing technologies and related infrastructure.

Potential areas include:

• Pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment

• Sterile processing and filling systems

• Cleanroom and controlled-environment technologies

• Industrial automation and process instrumentation

• Pharmaceutical HVAC and utility systems

• Cold-chain and temperature monitoring technologies

• Laboratory equipment and quality control systems

• Engineering, testing, inspection, and certification services

These areas represent potential technology requirements associated with pharmaceutical manufacturing expansion rather than confirmed procurement packages.

TECHNOLOGY AND INVESTMENT PARTNERSHIPS

Bio Farma has highlighted the importance of cooperation with technology companies, research institutions, and investors.

In its official announcement dated 27 October 2026, the company emphasised international collaboration, research and development, technology transfer, and improvements in pharmaceutical production capabilities.

Bio Farma has also indicated openness to investment cooperation with Danantara and other strategic partners to support its manufacturing expansion.

These developments highlight the company’s continued focus on strengthening its technological capabilities and expanding its presence in the global life sciences industry.

COMMERCIAL OUTLOOK

The proposed manufacturing facility represents a long-term industrial development within Indonesia’s healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors.

The expansion could create future opportunities for technology providers, engineering companies, research partners, and specialised industrial service providers.

However, no open tender, supplier selection process, investment value, or application deadline has been confirmed for the proposed new facility.

Further commercial opportunities will depend on subsequent project development and procurement announcements.
